MLS Next Pro Overview guide
Follow MLS NEXT Pro and explore one of the most important professional development competitions in North American soccer. Find out how the league works, how its 30 clubs are structured, how players progress toward MLS first teams, how the regular season and playoffs operate, and what makes the competition different from Major League Soccer.
Launched by Major League Soccer in 2022, MLS NEXT Pro is a professional men's soccer league operating in the United States and Canada. It sits at the centre of the MLS player-development pathway, connecting MLS NEXT academies with professional first teams while also creating space for independent professional clubs. The 2026 campaign is the league's fifth season. It features 30 clubs, 27 affiliated with MLS organizations and three independent teams: Carolina Core FC, Chattanooga FC and CT United FC. For users following the competition throughout the season, SoccerMatchToday provides a central starting point before moving into dedicated fixtures, results, standings, teams and player-focused pages.
What Is MLS NEXT Pro?
MLS NEXT Pro is a professional soccer competition designed to create meaningful first-team-level opportunities for emerging players while expanding professional soccer into new markets. The league connects three important stages of the MLS development pathway:
MLS NEXT
Youth development and academy competition.
MLS NEXT Pro
Professional competition where developing players can compete against other professional clubs and experienced players.
Major League Soccer
The first-team level for MLS organizations. That connection is central to the league's identity. MLS NEXT Pro reports that more than 200 players have progressed from the competition to sign MLS first-team contracts, while more than 1,300 MLS NEXT Academy players have appeared in the league since its launch. This makes the competition particularly valuable for supporters who want to follow players before they become established MLS starters.
MLS NEXT Pro 2026
The MLS NEXT Pro 2026 season expanded to 30 clubs following the arrival of CT United FC. The regular season started on 27 February, the earliest opening date in league history. Each club played:
- 28 regular-season matches
- 14 home matches
- 14 away matches
Across all teams, the league scheduled 420 regular-season games over approximately 30 weeks. The regular season concluded on Decision Day on 20 September, with all 30 clubs completing their schedules and postseason positions being determined. That moved the competition from its regular-season phase into the 2026 playoff programme.
How Many Teams Are in MLS NEXT Pro?
There are 30 MLS NEXT Pro teams in 2026. The league currently consists of: 27 MLS-affiliated clubs and 3 independent clubs The three independent teams are:
- Carolina Core FC
- Chattanooga FC
- CT United FC
CT United became the competition's 30th club in 2026 and joined Carolina Core and Chattanooga as the league's third independent organization. This mix gives MLS NEXT Pro two different club models. Many teams operate directly within an MLS organization's development structure. Independent clubs operate as standalone professional organizations while competing in the same league environment.
MLS-Affiliated Clubs
Most
MLS NEXT Pro
clubs are connected to Major League Soccer organizations. Examples include teams associated with:
- Atlanta United
- Austin FC
- Chicago Fire
- Columbus Crew
- FC Cincinnati
- Inter Miami
- New England Revolution
- New York City FC
- New York Red Bulls
- Philadelphia Union
- Portland Timbers
- Real Salt Lake
- Seattle Sounders
- Sporting Kansas City
- Toronto FC
- Vancouver Whitecaps
These teams allow organizations to give young players professional minutes while maintaining a direct connection with their senior MLS structure. A player can therefore move between academy football, MLS NEXT Pro competition and the first team as development, performance and roster circumstances require. For the complete active club lineup, use the dedicated teams section rather than turning this league overview into a duplicate club directory.
Independent MLS NEXT Pro Clubs
Independent clubs represent an important part of the competition's growth. Carolina Core FC and Chattanooga FC were already competing independently before CT United FC joined in 2026. Unlike MLS-affiliated second teams, these clubs operate with their own market identity and professional sporting objectives. Their presence broadens MLS NEXT Pro beyond a traditional reserve-team model. It also allows the league to introduce professional soccer into markets that may not currently have an MLS first team. MLS NEXT Pro has already announced additional independent and affiliated clubs expected in future seasons, including organizations connected with Cleveland, Jacksonville, Grand Rapids and Long Island.
MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference contains 16 clubs in 2026. CT United's arrival increased the Eastern side of the competition to 16 teams and led to an adjustment in divisional alignment. Chicago Fire FC II moved into the Southeast Division, while CT United joined the Northeast Division. Conference structure matters because regular-season scheduling and postseason qualification are organized around Eastern and Western competition. For current positions, points and qualification places, the dedicated MLS NEXT Pro standings page should be used rather than this league overview.
MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference
The Western Conference contains 14 clubs during the 2026 season. Western clubs include organizations from markets across the United States and Canada, producing a broad geographic footprint that stretches across multiple time zones. The conference system limits some of the travel burden associated with a continent-wide professional league while still allowing clubs to compete for a place in the same postseason championship. At the end of the playoffs, the surviving Eastern and Western teams meet for the MLS NEXT Pro Cup.
How the MLS NEXT Pro Regular Season Works
The 2026 regular season consisted of 28 matches per team. Each club played 14 games at home and 14 away. Scheduling emphasized divisional and conference opponents, with clubs facing divisional rivals up to three times and additional intraconference opponents completing the programme. This means the competition does not use the same schedule model as MLS. MLS NEXT Pro has its own match count, conference structure and competitive rules. For individual dates and upcoming games, the dedicated fixture page remains the correct destination.
MLS NEXT Pro Points System
One of the competition's most distinctive features is what happens when a regular-season game finishes level after 90 minutes. A regulation victory earns three points. A regulation defeat earns zero points. If the match is tied after regulation, both clubs receive one point and the game proceeds to a penalty shootout. The shootout winner earns one additional point, giving that club two points from the match while the shootout loser receives one. This makes MLS NEXT Pro different from most traditional soccer leagues where a draw simply awards one point to each team and the match ends there.
Why MLS NEXT Pro Uses Shootouts
The shootout rule ensures every regular-season match produces an additional competitive outcome when regulation ends level. It creates three possible points outcomes: 3 points: regulation win 2 points: draw followed by shootout win 1 point: draw followed by shootout loss That creates another dimension in both match strategy and the league table. It also introduces the shootout wins statistic, often displayed as SOW in MLS NEXT Pro standings. For users unfamiliar with the competition, understanding this rule is essential before interpreting the table.
MLS NEXT Pro Standings and Tiebreakers
League position is determined by the points accumulated across the regular season. If two or more clubs finish level, official tiebreak criteria begin with:
- Regulation wins
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Shootout wins
Additional home, away and disciplinary criteria can then be applied if teams remain tied. The current ranking itself belongs on the standings page, but these rules are part of understanding how MLS NEXT Pro works as a competition.
MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs 2026
The 2026 postseason introduces a new play-in stage. Seven teams from each conference qualified automatically for the postseason field. Those automatic positions consist of the two division champions plus the next five teams with the highest points totals in each conference. The eighth and ninth seeds then meet in a single-elimination Play-in Round, with the winner taking the final No. 8 playoff seed. That creates a final postseason field of: 8 Eastern Conference clubs and 8 Western Conference clubs for 16 total teams after the play-in matches are completed.
MLS NEXT Pro Play-In Round
The Play-in Round is new for 2026. The No. 8 and No. 9 teams in each conference meet in a single match. The eighth seed hosts. The winner progresses into the Conference Quarterfinals as the final playoff qualifier. The 2026 Play-in matches are scheduled for 11 October. This adds another competitive line around the lower postseason places and gives ninth-place clubs a route into the main playoff bracket.
Pick-Your-Opponent Format
One of the most unusual features of the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs is the Pick-Your-Opponent system. Instead of relying entirely on a traditional fixed bracket, higher-seeded clubs can select their opponents from designated lower seeds. The format returns in 2026 for the fourth consecutive season and is used during the Conference Quarterfinals and Conference Semifinals. This adds a strategic dimension before the game even begins. A high seed does not simply receive the next team based on a normal bracket. It must actively choose the opponent it wants to face. That decision can create additional pressure because the selected team enters the match knowing it was deliberately chosen.
2026 MLS NEXT Pro Playoff Schedule
The 2026 postseason is scheduled across October and early November. The current competition calendar is: Play-in Round: October 11 Conference Quarterfinals: October 16-18 Conference Semifinals: October 23-25 Conference Finals: October 30-November 1 MLS NEXT Pro Cup: November 6-8 The Cup decides the overall league champion. For exact playoff matchups and match dates, use the current fixture or playoff section because participants change as each round is completed.
MLS NEXT Pro Cup
The MLS NEXT Pro Cup is the final match of the postseason and determines the league champion. The 2026 final is scheduled for the weekend of 6-8 November. Hosting rights are connected to regular-season performance, with the finalist holding the higher regular-season points total scheduled to host the championship match under the 2026 format. Winning the Cup represents the final objective after the regular season, play-in stage, conference rounds and conference finals.
Previous MLS NEXT Pro Champions
The competition has produced a different champion in each of its first four seasons. The Cup winners are:
2022:
Columbus Crew 2
2023:
Austin FC II
2024:
North Texas SC
2025:
New York Red Bulls II New York Red Bulls II won the 2025 final against Colorado Rapids 2 after a 3-3 match was eventually decided in a penalty shootout. That history shows how quickly competitive leadership can change within a league centred heavily on player development and evolving rosters.
Why Player Development Matters
The core purpose of MLS NEXT Pro goes beyond winning individual matches. The league is designed to give young players meaningful professional competition. A highly rated academy player may need stronger opposition than youth football can provide but may not yet be ready to start regularly in MLS. MLS NEXT Pro fills that gap. The league reported before the 2026 season that more than 230 players had signed MLS first-team contracts after spending time in the competition. Those numbers make the league particularly valuable for supporters tracking emerging talent.
From MLS NEXT to MLS NEXT Pro
The pathway can begin in MLS NEXT academy football. Players performing at youth level may then receive opportunities in MLS NEXT Pro, where they face older and more physically developed professionals. More than 1,300 MLS NEXT Academy players had appeared in MLS NEXT Pro by the beginning of the 2026 season. That allows clubs to test young players without forcing an immediate jump directly from academy competition into MLS. For talent identification, the league therefore offers an early look at many players before they become widely recognised.
From MLS NEXT Pro to MLS
Progression can continue from the league into MLS first teams. Players may earn:
- MLS contracts
- First-team training opportunities
- Senior match selections
- Permanent roster promotion
Coaches and technical staff have also used the competition as a pathway toward first-team positions. This makes MLS NEXT Pro both a league in its own right and an important part of the wider North American professional soccer system.
MLS NEXT Pro vs MLS
MLS and MLS NEXT Pro should not be treated as the same competition. Major League Soccer is the senior first-team league. MLS NEXT Pro is a separate professional competition with its own clubs, regular season, standings, playoff format and championship. Many clubs are organizationally connected, but their records are separate. A victory by Inter Miami CF II, for example, does not add points to Inter Miami CF's MLS standing. Likewise, an MLS first-team result does not affect its affiliate's MLS NEXT Pro position. Understanding this distinction is especially important when users encounter similar club names.
MLS NEXT Pro vs MLS NEXT
MLS NEXT is also different from MLS NEXT Pro. MLS NEXT primarily serves the elite youth development structure. MLS NEXT Pro is professional men's competition. The relationship between the two is developmental rather than interchangeable. Players can move from an MLS NEXT academy into professional competition and then potentially progress toward an MLS first team. That creates a connected pathway without making the competitions themselves identical.
Independent Clubs and League Growth
Independent clubs are becoming increasingly important to the league's expansion strategy. Carolina Core, Chattanooga and CT United demonstrate that MLS NEXT Pro can operate beyond MLS-affiliated second teams. The league has also identified additional markets and clubs expected to join in future seasons. This development could gradually make the competition more diverse, with a combination of development-focused affiliates and independent professional organizations competing within the same structure.
New York Red Bulls II as Defending Champions
New York Red Bulls II entered 2026 as defending champions after winning the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro Cup. They defeated Colorado Rapids 2 following a 3-3 championship match that ultimately went to penalties. The title made New York Red Bulls II the fourth different champion in four seasons. For a league where squad composition can change quickly as players move toward first teams, repeated championship success is particularly difficult.
The 2027 MLS NEXT Pro Calendar Change
The competition will undergo a major scheduling change after 2026. MLS NEXT Pro has announced a transition toward a summer-to-spring calendar. The process begins with a shorter 2027 Sprint Season, scheduled from February through May. Each club will play 14 regular-season matches before four rounds of playoffs and the MLS NEXT Pro Cup. The first full summer-to-spring season will then begin in July 2027.
MLS NEXT Pro 2027/28
The 2027/28 campaign will run from July 2027 through June 2028. Each club is scheduled to play 28 regular-season matches. The first part of the season runs from mid-July to mid-December, followed by a winter break. Competition then resumes in early February and continues into May before the playoffs and June Cup final. The change is designed to align calendars across MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT from 2027/28 onward. For a league built around player movement between those levels, that alignment could simplify development and roster transitions.
